That is written in the disclaimer as well, and it is worth repeating here rather than burying. It means you should do what you would do with any trade: ask for a certificate of currency for public liability insurance, ask what qualification the person quoting actually holds, and get the scope in writing before anyone starts. A good contractor will hand those over without being pushed.
What the work is meant to look like
Whoever attends should turn up, look at the tree rather than at the house, and tell you what is actually wrong with it. Pruning cuts should be made to Australian Standard AS 4373 at the branch collar. Anything over a roof, a pool or a garden bed should be rigged and lowered rather than dropped. Green waste should be chipped and taken away, and the site left blown down.
And the permit question should be answered before the quote, not after the job. On the North Shore that is the single most consequential part of the conversation.
What we will tell you not to do
Topping a healthy tree because it is tall. Cutting half the live crown out of a mature eucalypt in one visit. Cutting a conifer hedge back past the green, which never recovers. Removing a structurally sound remnant blackbutt or blue gum at Pymble or St Ives because it looks big — an application for that will very likely be refused, and the tree is not the hazard it appears to be.
If pruning will fix your problem, that is what we will quote. If nothing will and the tree has to go, removal is straightforward enough once the paperwork is right.
Local knowledge, specifically
The reason the suburb pages exist is that the North Shore is not one place. Ku-ring-gai, Willoughby, Hornsby, Lane Cove and Ryde each regulate trees differently. The shale ridge grows different trees from the sandstone gullies. A Riverview block with stair-only access is a different job from a flat Denistone block with a wide driveway. A quote that does not account for those is not a quote, it is a guess.
